Community FocusWe are all part of a local and a global community. We at Insight Optometry Group are thankful for the opportunity to support initiatives which benefit those in need at home and abroad.Since 1982 Dr. Dobbelsteyn has participated annually in vision care projects to Jamaica, providing eyecare to over thousands needy children and adults, including helping to develop and maintain a glaucoma clinic in the mountains outside Kingston. Dr. Gray has participated in several projects in St. Martens, Saba, Anguilla, and Trinidad. Canadian Vision Care (CVC) has been providing free vision care to individuals in less privileged parts of the world since 1981. Working in partnership with Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as churches and public health organizations, projects have been focused in areas where they can be most effective. In 1999 the St. Maarten Lions Club contacted CVC to initiate a vision screening program for the children on the Dutch side of the Island. The request for this program arose from an identified need for screening of children in an area where resources are limited and many families are not able to afford the services of the local ophthalmologist. In 2007 Drs. Gray and Dobbelsteyn participated in a professional capacity for volunteer vision care projects in Saba, Anguilla, and St. Maartens with Canadian Vision Care. CVC is a registered charity, and donations for projects of this type are always welcome. Feel free to speak to either of the doctors should you wish to learn more. Phoenix Youth Programs is a non-profit, community based organization located in Halifax. They offer at-risk and homeless youth, ages 16 - 24, the opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness to find a path from the street. Since its inception in 1984, Phoenix Youth Programs have developed an extensive variety of programs and services to address the individual needs of each client. Kosovo Vision Project Many of our doctors and staff were instrumental in the provision of urgent vision care services to over 500 Kosovar refugees in Halifax in 1999. Drs. Dobbelsteyn, Davis, Gray and Sangster have been proud sponsors of Celebrity Dreamscape, which is the signature fundraising event for Phoenix Youth Programs. In 2008, they were thrilled to be a Bronze Sponsor for this event. Insight Optometry Group also are consultants for the eyecare needs of their youth. |
